I confess to using these words interchangeably, but should they be used interchangeably?
This morning I woke up wondering … what’s the difference between these words? Is there a difference?
And so began the research process.
Here are my findings:
While all four terms relate to mental capacity, they have distinct nuances.
Smart often implies quick learning and resourcefulness, especially in practical situations.
Intelligent suggests a broader ability to acquire and process information, often academically.
Clever highlights ingenuity and resourcefulness in problem-solving, sometimes with a hint of trickery.
Wise emphasizes good judgment, life experience, and the ability to discern what’s right and best, even in complex situations.
